Helix Nebula @ Copernicus Big Data Workshop, 13-14 March, Brussels

13/03/2014 - 00:00 to 14/03/2014 - 00:00

T-Systems presented Helix Nebula at the Copernicus Big Data Workshop in 13-14 March 2014 in Brussels, Belgium.

ESA and Atos  have also attend the workshop representing Helix Nebula.

The European Commission DG Enterprise had invited about 120 experts from national and international Space Authorities, Research and Education, IT industry and the Public Sector to share experience of the use of Big Data in Earth Observation (EO). They were supported by scientist from other disciplines e.g. High-Energy Physics and Astronomy that have to deal with big data in their research domains.

ESA, EEA and JRC gave an update on the status of EO big data and an outlook on the Copernicus programme.

Helix Nebula was presented by T-Systems together with the Copernicus Central Pick-up Point it has build under contract for ESA – both of them connected to the GÉANT network - to demonstrate how Copernicus big data can be taken to the users in new ways and enable EO applications in the cloud. International experience was contributed by NASA, USGS, NOAA from the US and JAXA from Japan. ESA and national space agencies presented plans how Copernicus Big Data can be exploited in future. This was complemented by presentations from several industry partners showing solutions to support data processing and exploitation and thematic presentation from several EU-projects e.g. EGI that confirmed the relevance of EO data for various disciplines.

Stakeholders are determined to turn the new capabilities of the Copernicus programme into a success and participants were convinced that big data technologies will be playing an important role to achieve this.
